Kathu is one of Phuket’s three districts. It covers Patong and Kamala on the west coast as well as Kathu village inland, between Patong and Phuket Town. The inland part is residential, with golf courses and international schools nearby, and it is chosen mostly by people who live on the island all year rather than by holiday buyers.

Questions buyers ask
Can foreigners buy property in Kathu?
Yes, under the same rules as anywhere in Thailand. A foreigner can own a condominium unit freehold within the building’s 49% foreign quota. Land can be owned freehold only by Thai nationals, so a foreign villa buyer usually takes a registered 30-year lease of the land.
How far is Kathu from the airport?
Our Kathu guide gives around 30 km to Phuket International Airport; by car allow about 40 to 50 minutes, more in high-season traffic. From Patong the road crosses the hills, so allow extra time there.
